Breakfast, parrot style

Among my favourites of the many birds species to be seen on our property is the Crimson Rosella, Platycercus elegans, a member of the parrot family.

Early this morning a pair flew down to our digs and while one kept watch from a conveniently located protrusion of our house construction, the other chowed down on the seeds from a thistle.  I should probably have shooed her away, for one thing, she was making an almighty mess, and for another, the seeds will get everywhere and if there’s one thing this world really doesn’t need, it’s more thistles.

But she was so lovely sitting there having her breakfast and it was such an entertaining scene, that I didn’t have the heart to chase her off, but just stood entranced in my doorway and watched till she finished munching and flew cheerfully away. Amazing how something so simple and insignificant as a parrot's breakfast could set me up for having a cheerful morning myself.
