What News, Where? I Didn't See no Stinkin' News!

Okay, are people getting dumber, wholesale?  Am I getting older?

I've been trying to get on with some reading, just to catch up on the world at large, and I am amazed at the superficiality with which world news is treated.  Are people just so used to the 15-second sound bite that they’ve lost their ability to concentrate for any respectable length of time, and so do not even realise the gaping chasms in the amount and quality of the information we receive?

Now, when I was a teenager, I expected that sort of thing from newsmagazines and the like, even welcomed it, because I had so much studying to do, it was good if I could get easy-to-read summaries of news someplace.

Now, however, when I *want* to read something more in-depth, I’m rather at a loss as to where to find it.  The ‘news’ online is just the same old regurgitated lines, no matter how many different websites I cruise to.  I am dismayed by the pseudo reporting: whether it’s the death of Peter Falk, or the current BBC series on the new Chinese billionaires, there is only a minimum amount of surface reporting.

I don't want infomercials, I don't want adverts or propaganda, I want news!

Was it always like this?

Where do you turn to read fuller reports?  Comments?  Advice?

  1. Aleta ~ News ~ well maybe the Huffington Post online? ~ Younger generation I found are not 'readers' ~ when I was teaching on the college level ~ most of them didn't even read a newspaper ~ All info seems to come from the internet ~ Personally, I don't 'listen to the news' ~ it is all so negative ~ I am aware of the world around and what is happening ~ and do just grab the 'headlines' on line and read more if interested ~ The Sun and Parabola are 2 hard copy publications I like for 'ideas' and of course, Art Review is great for sophisticated articles on art ~ Enjoy the day ~ hugs, Carol (artmusedog)

  2. Thanks for the comments, Carol. I think you're right.
I find that television news is either hype or fluff. Sigh. Maybe I'm just aging?

And I will, too try the Huffington Post online! :)
